Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

I hope you had a chance to enjoy the long weekend.   

A week from now, on Monday 20th June at 10:30am, the Women in Physics group in collaboration with the Physics Equity and Diversity committee will be opening the new Physics Parents' Room (Cockcroft 4.36). It has been a pleasure to see this space being redeveloped over the past month and I would like to thank all those who have contributed so keenly to the design and fit-out of this room. Everyone is invited to a morning tea in the Oliphant tea room, at 10:30am on the 20th, to celebrate the opening and afterwards join a tour of the facilities, which include;

• Facilities and space for baby care
• Option for three people to feed/pump in private (cubicles with curtains for privacy)
• Comfortable seating and a pleasant environment
• A desk and a couch
• A highchair
• Lockers for storing equipment
• Toys and books to help entertain young children
• Hot & cold water & facilities for handwashing and cleaning pumping equipment
• Fridge, hot water, and a microwave.
• Place to change nappies
• Is stocked with consumables such as nappies, breast pads, creams
• Power point access for breast pumps or charging mobile phone or laptop

For those familiar with the Cockcroft building, the room is near the eastern lift (or the stack machine, which might be more familiar!)

The Woman in Physics excursion to RSAA last week was a great success, as can be seen in the photo above. All told, around 40 women attended ranging from Masters to Professor, and including professional staff. My thanks to all the organisers, in particular Dr Julie Tournet (EME/SoEng), and our hosts at Mt Stromlo. I believe there are plans for similar future events, stay tuned.

Last Thursday, Professor Jagadish and I visited Professor Bob Crompton on his 96th birthday. It was lovely to see him so well. Bob has now been a valued member of our School community for over 60 years, a fact visitors to his room at Goodwin House are reminded of from the many photos of esteemed colleagues and unique experimental equipment around the walls. The student travel fund established by Helen and Bob is one of their lasting gifts to the School (see below). It closes in one month.

Call For Applications For The Robert and Helen Crompton Award

Applications closing date 10 July 2022

We are seeking applications for the Robert and Helen Crompton Award, valued up to $15,000.

This generous award is funded by The Robert and Helen Crompton Endowment Fund. Emeritus Professor Robert Crompton, an ANU physicist for over 40 years, and his wife Helen established this Endowment to provide support for outstanding physics students. It is the intention of the Research School and the Crompton family that the fund is used to enhance career opportunities and experience of students.

Martha Reece, Honours NPAA, for being awarded the Priscilla Fairfield Bok Prize for 2021. This award is granted to the female student with the highest marks in third year courses in Science.

The ANU Centre for Gravitational Astrophysics will be running a Winter Research Program from 20 June until 22 July 2022.  The program is suitable for third-year and Honours students in Physics, Astrophysics and Engineering, currently enrolled at all universities across the country.There is a generous weekly allowance on offer, in addition, students currently enrolled at interstate universities will receive travel and accommodation assistance.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITY

Over the past several months, the ANU-CSIRO Collaborations Steering Committee has been working with CEAT and members of CSIRO Ag & Food to develop a pilot program designed to kick start collaborations between ANU and CSIRO in the agri-food domain.  The initiative has the approval/support of the DVCR and Deans of the College of Science and CECS. Year 12 student Fredy Yip won overall first at the 2022 Asian Physics Olympiad in India with a score of 47.6 out of 50—the first Australian student to ever achieve the highest score. Fredy visited ANU for an intensive training session in April before competing in the Asian Physics Olympiad remotely. Australian Science Innovations partner with ANU to support and train talented science students to explore their interest in STEM and compete the International Science Olympiads.

An annual student event aimed at showcasing the amazing research done by our students and celebrating the wealth of talent in our School.

The John Carver Seminar Series 2022 will be held on Monday 26 September at 10am. We are hoping to hold this event in the new Auditorium, but will confirm the venue closer to the date.

Students wishing to participate in the John Carver Seminar Series will need to present a 15-minute talk on their research to the audience of fellow students and RSPhys colleagues. The talks are not followed by questions.

The talks are judged by a panel of three judges (two academics and a student).
