Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
I hope you had a good weekend.
My congratulations to the authors of a stunning new development in metasurfaces published in Science Advances last week. In their work they demonstrate the chip-scale production of paired entangled photons emitted in different directions, a distinguishing feature of their new quantum light source. The Centre Director for Transformative Meta-Optical Systems, Prof Dragomir Neshev, tells me this remarkable result is only the beginning with more on the way. My thanks to Dr Phil Dooley for his web article of this announcement, with wonderful images by Martin Conway.
With the vacuum vessel stripped away the image above shows the inner beauty of the H1 Stellarator fully exposed. This is a rare event only happening a few times in the past two decades and provides the final chance to see this marvel of engineering and technical excellence before it departs to its new home. If you would like to see this magnificent device up close we will be holding viewings today and tomorrow (1st and 2nd August), 1000-1200. Just pop down to Level 2, Cockcroft Building and follow the signs. It is well worth making time to see it in person. We really do have a fabulous workshop.
The School Executive is being held on Thursday. If you have items you would like to raise please speak to your Heads or representatives.
Best regards, Tim |

Dark Matter In The Pub
One of the greatest mysteries of science is Dark Matter - an invisible substance that seems to be all around galaxies, affecting how they rotate. Maybe it's right here around us as well, but we can't see it!
The ARC Dark Matter Particle Physics Centre of Excellence is setting out to detect it, in a re-purposed mine shaft in Stawell Victoria.
Come and meet the researchers and hear them talk about this remarkable quest, in the relaxed atmosphere of Smiths Alternative. Grab a beverage and a snack for eight short talks from astronomers, particle physicists, nuclear physicists and engineers collaborating on this epic mystery.
WHEN: 7 PM Sunday 14 August WHERE: Smiths Alternative, 76 Alinga St, Civic COST: FREE thanks to sponsorship by the ARC Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics REGISTER: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/dark-matter-in-the-pub-tickets-380795137507 » read more
