Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
It is a great pleasure to congratulate Distinguished Professor Chennupati Jagadish on his induction into the Royal Institute of Engineers as one of only seven international Fellows this year, and the very first from ANU to receive this highly prestigious honour. Please join me in congratulating Jagadish.
The ARC Centre of Excellence, Transformative Meta-Optical Systems was officially launched on Wednesday. Congratulations to the entire TMOS team, it was a truly magnificent event. Below are some images including Prof Lan Fu as MC, Uncle Paul House (Ngambri-Ngunnawal custodian) welcoming us to Country, Vice-Chancellor Prof Brian Schmidt, TMOS Director Prof Dragomir Neshev, and ARC COE Judi Zielke. And, the cake was fantastic! On the way out I invited our Chancellor, Hon. Julie Bishop, and VC to pose in front of the homo-polar generator, a timely photo given their next event was to launch a book by Hon. Brett Mason, “The Wizards of Oz”, which celebrates the roles Mark Oliphant and Howard Florey played in three pivotal developments during the Second World War. Below, the VC is seen in conversation with the author.
Finally, really finally, the H1 Stellarator is out the door and a new life begins for this amazing piece of RSPhys engineering. My thanks to Michael Blacksell for coordinating this enormous project.
Martin Conway recorded a two month long timelapse of the whole disassembly of H1 here. The final image shows the signatures of the academic and technical staff involved in the design and construction of H1.
Have a good week, Tim |
