Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
While Saturday, 11th February might be the actual International Day of Women and Girls in Science there is every reason to celebrate this by wearing purple at any time this or next week. I'll be dressing for STEM on Friday. Luda Mango, Siobhan Ryman and Ellen Zheng (DQST) got in early (above), with thanks to Em/Prof Neil Manson for his encouragement. Keep your eyes peeled for Women in Physics events.
A reminder that two opportunities exist to attend free workshops; • Pitch training for the Kinetic competition. Just 90 min of professional training with the Crompton School, might win your great idea real cash to develop it. • Australian Science Communicators will be running an intensive Science Communication workshop for EMCRs on 18th Feb 2023 (8 hours in our auditorium and then 2 hours at the Badger & Co). Physics will get FIVE free places.
Below, a farewell and a welcome. Steph Morrison (ANU Enterprise) stands with some of the LIGO Coatings Team, who won a multi-million pound contract to coat the beam splitter used in the next development of LIGO. Steph is thanked by the team for her amazing project management and contracting skills. She will depart for a new position with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation. And a welcome to Dr Tom McGoran who has joined as the Chief Operating Office for the NCRIS funded Heavy Ion Accelerator program. Tom graduated from Nuclear Physics in the early 2000’s and then moved into a career in the Australian Public Service, including several significant positions in Defence. He brings a wealth of experience to the Facility and will play an important part in growing our this National capability.
Finally, cyber security continues to be a strong focus and could you please review the message below.
Have a great week, Tim |

Windows 8.1 End Of Life
It is that time again. Windows 8.1 has now reached end of life and is no longer getting security updates from Microsoft. We need to work to remove all Windows 8.1 (and earlier) machines from our network, either through upgrading to Windows 10 or locking out the network ports.
If you know of any Windows 8.1 machines in the school please let us know at it.physics@anu.edu.au so that we can assist you with the process. |

Creating A Roadmap For Perovskite Nanophotonics |
|
Halide perovskites are the most recent addition to the dielectric nanophotonic platforms, they are well suited for a variety of nanofabrication techniques and possess refractive indices high enough to efficiently support optical resonances when nanostructured. Perovskites gain novel nonlinear properties from structuring as observed experimentally, said a PhD student of Nonlinear Physics Center Mr. Pavel Tonkaev, one of the key authors of the invited roadmap paper published in Science Direct. | |
