Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
It is a pleasure to welcome Prof John Close (QST) to the School Executive as the new Associate Director (Research). John brings a depth of experience to the group having served at that level before as Head of Department and Associate Director (Education). When you see him next please welcome him into the role, and please share with him your thoughts about how our research environment might be improved.
Last week we received the Italian Scientific Attaché, Dr Marco Lazzarino, seen above with Em/Prof David Hinde (NPAA) in the Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility. Marco is relatively new in post and keen to connect Italian researchers with the School. If you have an interest or have existing Italian collaborations please let me know and we will arrange a morning tea with Marco to explore possibilities.
Last week our School signed an Memorandum of Understanding with the ACT Government to combine our focus on engagement with the Canberra Innovation Network (CBRIN). The MoU will help bring a greater regional focus on our translational activities and will include investment showcases, training and workshop support.
You will have just seen the CoS Research Management team has details for the next ARC Industry Transformation Research Platforms. We are gaining some experience in this scheme within the School so please reach out to John Close, RM or me if you have interest.
Last week H/Prof Dick Henley was honoured with the 2022 Haddon Forrester King career medal from the Academy of Science (below). He delivered a great lecture to a full theatre under the dome, found here.
Finally, since we started the campaign to increase training currency we have better than doubled our compliance. I am very grateful to all those who have attended to this, however it still leaves about one third our the School without the demonstrable training to retain access to their laboratories. Can you please endeavour to review your access and associated training (here) by May 1st. Please discuss with your Head if there are difficulties with completing your WHS training before this date.
Best regards, Tim |

Circular Economy Round Table - Call For EoI
Transitioning to a circular economy is of growing interest to governments and industry around Australia. Please join an ANU Circular Economy Round Table to explore how researchers in this field can capitalize on this emerging opportunity. ACT NoWaste and CSIRO have been invited to deliver the Round Table opening remarks that highlight the role for research based solutions in the achievement of their visions. We will then move into an internal discussion that will facilitate informal conversations with and between researchers about the value they would derive from a concerted effort to engage around a circular economy theme. The Round Table will be preceded by refreshments and the opportunity to network with colleagues.
