Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
It is a tremendous pleasure to congratulate Matthias Wurdack (QST) on his award of a Schmidt Fellowship, which I believe is the first from ANU. Matthias recently completed his PhD with Prof Elena Ostrovskaya and is currently on a research trip to Jena. Matthias joins 32 remarkable young researchers from 14 countries, all selected for their interdisciplinary research and leadership potential. Over the past 6 years, Wendy and Eric Schmidt have sponsored 145 fellows from 34 counties with the aim of fostering an international community from the inception of their careers. Fellows will receive $100k/year for two years to undertake post-doctoral work anywhere in the world. Their projects are quite inspirational.
To my delight Physics spin-out, Nomad Atomics, hosted Minister Ed Husic for the release of the National Quantum Strategy, last Wednesday (image below is from Nomad’s LinkedIn). The NQS promises much for physics and represents a well structured approach, linking with regional initiatives.
The ABC TOP 5 Science is a two-week media residency is running again, sponsored by ABC Radio National in partnership with the Centre for the Public Awareness of Science (CPAS). The program is tailored for early-career researchers and involves a two week residency in Sydney at the ABC studios. Apply here.
In partnership with the Breakthrough Prize Foundation, the Australian Academy of Science has announced support for Ukrainian researchers. The program offers support for colleagues to visit Australia, as well as support for access to facilities. Closes May 31st.
I received the two cheery images above almost simultaneously from Profs Jodie Bradby (Head, MP) and Cédric Simenel (Head, FTP) last Wednesday. Their photos build on the physics-y themed views from our new building over the past two weeks and I’m fully expecting a scene for next week which highlights the remaining phase of water.
Stay warm, Tim |

Circular Economy Round Table - Call For EoI
Transitioning to a circular economy is of growing interest to governments and industry around Australia. Please join an ANU Circular Economy Round Table to explore how researchers in this field can capitalize on this emerging opportunity. ACT NoWaste and CSIRO have been invited to deliver the Round Table opening remarks that highlight the role for research based solutions in the achievement of their visions. We will then move into an internal discussion that will facilitate informal conversations with and between researchers about the value they would derive from a concerted effort to engage around a circular economy theme. The Round Table will be preceded by refreshments and the opportunity to network with colleagues.
The event will be held at the aMBUSH Gallery on 5 June 2023. » read more
