Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

The inaugural Physics team for the Vinnies Sleepout is preparing for Thursday night. I’m so pleased that Profs Hoe Tan, Jodie Bradby, Lan Fu, and John Close will be joining me in the Garden of Australian Dreams, National Museum of Australia for a very chilly night sleeping rough, sadly as many of our fellow Canberrans do each night. Please dig deep and support this very worthy cause. Prof Patrick Kluth will be joining in spirit as he has a prior commitment. Our team goal is $24k, but we’re only 25% there with four days left. We need your help to bring comfort to our City’s most needy.

On Friday afternoon our auditorium will host the final pitch session for Kinetic, an open search for game-changing new ideas. This has been a great partnership with the MakerSpace and the Compton School, drawing in ANU staff and students at all stages from across ANU. After two rounds of voting and specialised pitch training, the initial field of 26 teams is now down to 8 teams. Get your Eventbrite tickets here (Zoom also). See all the team projects here.

My thanks to Dr AJ Mitchell (NPAA) for organising a very special Equity & Diversity Committee event last Thursday as Dave Widders, an Anaiwan man from Armidale NSW took the group through a wonderful First Nations cultural training session (see below, photo John Close). BTW, I can highly recommend Professor Tom Calma’s talk on Thursday (see below).

Have a good week,
Tim

Gender Biases Not Improved Over Past Decade, U.N. Says...

There are some shocking statistics in this UN report on gender bias. The survey draws from data sets spanning 2010-2014 and 2017–2022 from countries and territories covering 85% of the global population. Whilst women in many countries are more educated than men, the gender pay gap remains large and violence against women is still condoned by a significant proportion of the world’s population.
