Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
It’s great to see the students back for second semester, and to welcome our next cohort of Joint Science College students. Thank you to all those teaching this semester.
I’m so pleased to announce that the VC has approved the additional funding to move experimental equipment into the new building. First off the mark is the new Elionix Electron Beam Lithography tool, which moved in on Friday. Above, Ms Gayatri Vaidya, the ANFF EBL Officer can be seen here helping the Elionix technician install this facility over the next few weeks. Below, the install team after the first of many complex instrument moves to happen this year (and next). My thanks to everyone for their attention to safety. Today, the Ion Beam Sputter facility with start a critical and timely introduction in the cleanroom in preparation for coating the next LIGO beam splitter.
Last week we hosted ACT’s first Defence Industry Network event, teaming up with School of Computing to jointly present a snapshot of our related research to over 100 external delegates. My thanks to our presenters, Kate Ferguson (InSpace), Steve Madden (DQST), Rose Ahlefeldt (DQST), Andrey Sukhorukov (EME), John Close (AD(R)/DQST) and the Business Development Managers, Lori Sciusco (CECC) and Julie Dougherty (OCGR). Thanks also to those who stood by facility displays and research posters. The image below shows our foyer working exactly the way it was designed to.
On Friday we hosted a technical and business team from CIT exploring new ways for our workshops to expand opportunities for training in the ACT region. This is a critically important partnership and I hope to share more with you soon. Last image below shows Michael Blacksell speaking to our CIT colleagues about the role our workshops play.
The Expression of Interest for the Associate Director (Education) role opens today and will close 14th August. Check here for details.
Lastly, and maybe most importantly, please join me for a School morning tea in the new foyer on Thursday 27th at 10am for a special thanks to Professor Patrick Kluth (DMP) for his contributions as AD(HDR), and to Dr Mary Gray (COO TMOS) for her contributions as co-Chair for the Equity and Diversity committee. There will be sausage rolls galore!
Have a good week,
Tim
