Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

Thank you all so much for making Founder’s Day one of the best e-v-e-r. The presentations were all truly excellent and spoke volumes to the diversity of high quality research done in our school. Above, Dr Phil Dooley takes us out to “Quantum Paradox”. Oh, so memorable. Thanks Phil.

As foreshadowed at Founder’s Day the announcements of the remaining AIP awards were indeed imminent (and eminent as auto-correct suggests to me).  The 2023 Bragg Gold Medal for Excellence in Physics for the most outstanding PhD thesis in physics or its applications by a student from an Australian University has been awarded to DR Kirill Koshelev (NLPC/FTP).  And, the The 2023 TH Laby Medal for Excellence in Physics for the most outstanding Honours or Masters thesis in physics by a student from an Australian University has been to Martha Reece (NPAA).  My heartfelt congratulations to Martha and Kirill. Outstanding work.  My thanks also to their supervisors and the nominators.

Everyone is very welcome to join in a special school “thank you” to Prof Joe Hope for his extraordinary efforts as our Associate Director (Education) on Friday, 1030 in the foyer of the new building. There will be cake, specially selected as Joe’s favourite!!

As part of a new pathway to increased Defence innovation the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator will hold an in-person information session on November 29th at ANU. Register here.

The ANU Impact Fund, formally known as the Discovery Translation Fund, is now open for proposals until 22nd November. This is a great scheme and has helped a number of our most successful translational research programs over the years, in fact ALL of them. Up to $50k can be awarded to successful teams and I encourage both HDR students and EMCRs to apply. Details: ANU Impact Fund (ANU IF) - Staff Services - ANU.

Have a great week,
Tim
