Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
A huge vote of thanks go to Profs Jodie Brady (Head, MP) and Dragomir Neshev (Director TMOS, EME) as co-chairs of the ANZCOP-AIP conference last week, and to Dr Daria Smirnova and Prof Ben Buchler as AIP Technical Committee co-Chairs. Their wonderful helpers deserve a round of applause; Shankar Dutt, Laura Walmsley, Dige Wang, Xingshuo Huang, Hancheng Shao, Galina Shadrivova, Krisztina Thurzo, Nahid Afrid, Hendrik Heimes, Jessica Wierbik, Sam Case, Ankie Larsson, Taleb Alwadi, Alex Kiy, many summer and undergraduate students, the School teams from Stores and Purchasing, Facilities, IT and Admin. Our facilities were well and truly pressure tested, and I heard very many compliments about the conference, the excellent catering and the new building facilities. There is no doubt in my mind that our visiting colleagues enjoyed a superb conference. Well done everyone, something to be very proud of. Images below show the conference dinner at Old Parliament House.
Above, the recipients of the 2023 Director’s Awards; two individual awards went to Patrick Romero and Julie Arnold (FaceTimed in from the beach); the Team Award went to the Student Admin Team, Siobhan Ryman and Luda Mangos; and the External Team Award went to the College Finance Team. Well done to our colleagues, and as I mentioned we had the highest number of applications ever. It is so pleasing to see people wish to recognise our valued colleagues. Thank you for all the nominations, it means a great deal to me.
On Wednesday we honoured some our summer graduates attending the conferring. My thanks to Prof Patrick Kluth for hosting the School morning tea for friends and family of the graduands. Dr Matt Berrington delivered an amazing graduation speech at conferring, and Dr Kirill Koshelev received his JG Crawford prize in person. The VC commented that he needed every bit of his physics training to understand Kirill’s citation. It was a wonderful graduation.
To round off, I’ve included some memorable images from wonderful events that intersected the week of the conference; our VC’s final lecture at the National Press Club, the national announcement of New Frontier Technologies (a member of Momentum) iLaunch Trailblazer partnership deploying their unique composite tape robot at Mt Stromlo, the launch of the new optical ground station also at Mt Stromlo with VC, Chief Minister and A/Prof Francis Bennet (AITC/RSAA), and lastly, many of the amazing central School team enjoy their Xmas lunch.
Don’t forget our end of year tradiation, fruit mince pies on Thursday!
Cheers, Tim |
