Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
It’s a tremendous pleasure to see Distinguished Professor Susan Scott (CGA) jointly awarded the Peter Baume Award with Professor Carola Vinuesa (JCSMR). The Peter Baume Award is widely understood as the most prestigious recognition of service to the ANU. It is with equal delight that I also congratulate Professor Nanda Dasgupta (Director HIAF/NPAA) on her recognition with the Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Contribution to the University through her leadership in nuclear physics and the Heavy Ion Accelerator capability. Nanda shared this with Associate Professor Ryan Goss, for his contributions as the Head of Scholars House. Last week’s “On Campus” details the full citations and many well deserved other recognitions.
My sincere apologies to Dr Daria Smirnova (EME) for in my haste last week I skipped acknowledging her role as co-chair with Prof Ben Buchler (QST) in the AIP Technical Committee for the recent ANZCOP-AIP conference last week.
Below, what must surely be the oldest lift in Canberra. The motor was built in 10th May 1951 and I reckon installed not long afterwards in the newly constructed Cockroft Building. By the end of February the new lift should be in service. My thanks to the CTLab, WHS and Facilities teams for moving so quickly to take advantage of an early demolition start. Hugely appreciated.
It’s great to see that many have left already for a well-deserved break. For those still around on Thursday for morning tea don’t forget to join us for traditional fruit mince tarts in the new foyer. Above, inspired by the Founder’s Day meme competition I raided r/mathsmemes.
My wish is for everyone to have a safe, enjoyable and restful break.
Best regards, Tim |

End Of Year Finance Cut Offs
As we approach the year-end, just a friendly reminder to promptly process your Purchase Card Concur reports.
It is important to note that items purchased through an ANU purchase card are not encumbered to a General Ledger Code (GLC)/Financial budget until the claim is processed and approved via CONCUR.
To ensure accurate budget reflections for the current year, please be mindful that all transaction approvals must be completed by the 22nd of December 2023. Transactions processed after the University's year-end closure will be accounted for in the 2024 budget.
Your timely attention to this matter is greatly appreciated. Should you have any questions or require assistance, please refer to the ANU Purchase card Guidelines and procedures or contact the Purchasing Team. » read more

DeadlyScience's Microscope Campaign
The department of Materials Physics has started a tradition of supporting a charity as a part of their end of year celebration. This year the department supported DeadlyScience's microscope campaign.
For every $600 raised DeadlyScience will send Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learner classrooms; - a microscope, - a microscopy kit, - microscopy slides, and - a teacher guide
They set a target of supporting two microscopes and have done this, raising a total of $1250 so far! The campaign will be open for another few weeks and their sights are set on getting three microscopes! |
