Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
It’s nice to be back home.
My thanks to all the 3MT speakers this week. Another great showcase of research talent. Well done to Victoria Bashu, Bryan Teo, Tony Tran and Daniel Lee for their great presentations. Congratulations to the winners of the RSPhys 3 MT heat - Victoria Bashu (NPAA) – first prize, and Bryan Teo (MP) – Runner-up and People’s choice prizes. Thanks also to the judges – Dr Daria Smirnova, Dr Logan Davis and Ms Siobhan Ryman and to our MC, Ash Pascale (MP). All our students will appear in the CoS 3 Minute Thesis on Tuesday 25 June at 10 am in the China and the World.
One last plug for our Physics team sleeping out on TONIGHT to raise support to help Canberra’s homeless. All donations greatly appreciated.
It has been a pleasure to co-sponsor Dr Temilade Sesan (University of Ibadan, seen below with Dr Phil Dooley) with the Australian Science Communicators for their annual conference in Perth last week. If you’d like to see Temilade speak please join us at the Centre for the Public Awareness of Science, Green Couch Room Building 42a or online on Friday 21 June 12.00 – 1.00 (“Innovating toward contextually relevant practices of science, technology and development in Africa” - Password: cpasbb2024).
Keep warm, Tim |

Built in quality control to make quantum tech more reliable
|
One of quantum technology’s most powerful tools is interference, in which two or more identical particles interact in surprising ways – sometimes adding together, but sometimes subtracting from each other.
This property can be used for quantum computing, communication and encryption, but only if the interacting particles are identical - but achieving that can be a significant challenge.
Thanks to ANU physicists, a new technology reported in Optica is set to effectively address this challenge, making light-based quantum technologies more accurate and efficient. » read more
