Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

Many thanks to those who donated to the Physics Exec team. We raised over $7,608 this year, which was very gratefully received by Vinnies. Prof Hoe Tan and I joined 164 others in the Parliament House carpark last week, altogether raising over $842,000.

I’m pleased to invite you to a Director’s Colloquium next Wednesday to mark the signing of an ANU-wide MoU with Fujitsu to develop a broad research relationship (and teaching opportunities) around quantum technologies. The opportunities go beyond access to their inhouse super-conducting Q-computer and Fujitsu are inviting us to consider collaborations in fundamental research in topics ranging from materials science, optical systems and their Quantum-inspired Digital Annealer. This is the only MoU of its kind in Australia. ANU colleagues from across STEM are welcome to consider this opportunity. I am very grateful to A/Prof James Sullivan (NPAA) for bringing this opportunity to ANU. Please join us in the auditorium at 11am, Wednesday 3rd July to hear the Global Chief Technology Officer of Fujitsu, Vivek Mahajan, talk about innovation in one of the world’s top technology companies.

The ANU Defence Institute is soon to be launched and is inviting ANU staff to join the broader ANU Defence Network, spanning humanities, social science as well as STEM disciplines. For those interested please opt-in to the network by completing the Registration Form. If you have any questions, please contact Lori Sciusco or Julieanne Dougherty at defenceinstitute@anu.edu.au.

This week’s top pic shows Dr Victor Pantano (CEO, OreAI) introducing Uncle Paul Girrawah House for his Welcome to Country for the members of the ANU-Rio Tinto OreAI Symposium on Tuesday. Paul is seen right playing a glass didgeridoo he made at the Canberra Glassworks. Spanning two days this annual showcase draws together the research partnership achievements from a truly amazing activity. Well done to all those from Prof Mark Knackstedt’s group in Materials Physics. It is truly one of the most remarkable partnerships I’ve seen in the School.

Have a great weekend,
Tim
