Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

I received some lovely news over the weekend. Last week, Distinguished Professor Chennupati Jagadish (EME) was awarded Doctor of the University (honoris causa) from the University of Surrey by His Royal Highness and Chancellor, Duke of Kent. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Max Lu is seen with Jagadish on the right (photo credit: Yu Zhu). Please join me and congratulate Jagadish on this wonderful recognition.

After the enormous interest in the Sydney Habour Bridge laser cleaning story last week, Emeritus Professor Neil Manson (QST) reminded me of something I should have known. It isn’t the first time the School has painted the bridge with laser light. In 1998, a day before the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Sydney Opera House Neil got a frantic call from the organisers of the big show. Their laser had gone kaput. Always ready to help, Neil jumped in the car with a spare Ar ion laser and saved the day. The historical image below is a testament to Neil’s ingenuity.

Have a good week,
Tim

Windows 10 End of Life

Win10 will stop getting security updates in October 2025. It is important that we move all Physics computers to Win11 or remove them from the network by then.

Many computers in the school are too old to run Win11, so if your PC is more than about 7 years old you will need to start planning for its replacement.

Please reach out to it.physics@anu.edu.au for assistance with upgrading or replacing systems.
