Head of Department - DQS

After 8 years of dedicated service as Head of DQS (and another 3 years previously), Prof David McClelland will be stepping down from this role.  No doubt David will enjoy having more time to focus on his research in gravity wave detection. On behalf of myself, Steve Buckman and Jim Williams, I thank him for his considerable service to the School and his Department.

Congratulations and welcome to Prof Craig Savage as the new Head of Department DQS.

Congratulations

Would you wear your research?

Enchanting, captivating, thought-provoking; we think modern methods of scientific visualisation have the power to captivate any audience, but how often do we see this represented in everyday life?

Blushift is an aspiring fashion label envisioning the printing of aesthetically pleasing scientific results onto fabric in order to fashion them into trendy clothes (not just prints on a t-shirt!), with hope to provide with an alternative platform upon which scientists can make their work accessible to a broader audience and possibly become part of popular culture.

Blushift are a bunch of creative students studying astrophysics, science communication, art and law who are starting up a fashion label (currently being developed in the InnovationACT start-up competition).

Blushift believe that for many young people, the way one presents onesself and the clothing one wears in public are very important aspects of one’s identity, serving as communicators of one’s quirks and personality. Thus in presenting science as wearable, loud and fashionable, we hope to integrate science as a ‘cool’ aspect of everyday life which hopefully encourages unashamed curiosity in customers and youths.

If you thus have some crazy cool results crying to be appreciated by the mass population, please come talk to us over a slice of cake and coffee!

When: Thursday 24 September 3:30pm
Where: RSPE Tea-room

Hope to see you there and to soon materialise your work into ART!

Blushift are entrants in the current Innovation ACT program for young entrepreneurs (http://www.innovationact.org/) - Please come and support our local team. - Tim
