Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
I hope you had a good week. The last few weeks have seen us focussed on the energy that our undergraduate colleagues bring to our School. My thanks to all those who attended the PEC planning day last Thursday at gorgeous Mt Stromlo. I am grateful for all the leadership on display in PEC, and especially thankful to our AD(E), Prof Ben Buchler for all his efforts.
Yesterday, Market Day turned 11, an anniversary I know A/Prof Cormac Corr is rightly proud of. Please thank him for his endless enthusiasm for this signature event. I couldn’t be happier with the turn-out of staff and students, and the photo above shows the foyer was packed. Thanks to all the poster presenters, as always it is a great showcase of the future research opportunities in our School and a testament of your powers of engagement. Siobhan Ryman has been at the centre of these undergraduate-focused events and deserves special thanks for all she does to keep PEC a thriving and happy centre.
Last week the President of the Academy of Science, Distinguished Professor Chennupati Jagadish (EME) presented Distinguished Professor Susan Scott (CGA) with the 2023 Thomas Ranken Lyle Medal. The Lyle Medal is a career award recognising outstanding achievement for research in Mathematics or Physics. It is a pleasure to see this recognition and my congratulations go to Susan.
I hope you have a relaxing weekend. Tim |

Chiral Plasmonic Metasurfaces |
|
A concept of intrinsically chiral resonant dielectric metasurfaces was proposed very recently, and it combines strong narrowband resonant features with the polarization control of scattered light. A team from Nonlinear Physics Center designed a resonant chiral metallic metasurface supporting a bound state in the continuum resonance in the microwave wavelength range. They investigated intrinsic chiroptical effects for transmission of normally propagating excitation beams by breaking the meta-atom in-plane mirror symmetries. The project was driven Mr. Yiyuan Wang, a visiting PhD student from China, and the results have been published in Optics Letters. » read more

Establishing a Community of Practice - Conceptual Frameworks for HDR Candidates
University House has received generous philanthropic support to host a project of research and educational development to support HDR candidates in the development of conceptual frameworks. This academic work is consistent with University House’s commitment, as part of its hailstorm recovery program, to supporting HDR candidates across campus.
The project is being undertaken in partnership with the PVC (Graduate Research) portfolio, including the Directors of HDR Supervision Development and Researcher Development.
We invite ANU colleagues with an interest in this topic to join us in a community of practice to engage with the project.
