Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

We’ve had a great week for seminars and I hope you had a chance to see them. Firstly, Prof Susan Coppersmith provided an insightful look at stochastic resonance, and then nine inspiring talks from a selection of our PhD students for the John Carver Seminar series. My congratulations go to all the presenters. They were all excellent presentations as well as excellent research. I am grateful to Drs Ivan Toftul and Rocio Camacho Morales for joining me on the judging panel. It was a particularly difficult job this year.

  • The John Carver Prize: Callum Sambridge (CGA)
  • Dean’s Prize: Bryan Teo (MP)
  • Director's Prize: Navneet Krishnan (FTP)
  • Peoples’ Choice: Daniel Lee (NPAA) & Callum Sambridge (CGA)

Thanks as always to Luda Mangos for arranging everything so beautifully, seen below feeding the masses with a celebratory lunch.

There are a couple of articles to point you towards. The latest news story on quantum dots as lego for photonic components is up on our website. Also, on the ANU Reporter website Peter Rigg is interviewed about the complexities of time.

Have a great weekend,
Tim

Grassy Woodlands Walk for World Habitat Day

Grassy woodlands are a threatened ecosystem, and we are lucky to have here on campus a relatively well-preserved example. Dominated by eucalypts, grassy woodlands have an open canopy with shrubs and a diverse groundcover. Located below 1000 metres on fertile lowlands after fires ground orchids and lilies emerge, the regeneration an important part of the lifecycle of these plants.

Join us for a walk through this important habitat, learn about the threatened and protected species that can be found here, and how we manage and conserve them with Mick Kelly our Landscape & Conservation Manager.

During the walk, keep an eye out for the Hoary sunray, an endangered everlasting daisy species that can be found.

Bring your hat, some comfortable shoes and a bottle of water.

Date: Wednesday 9th October (Will be rescheduled if weather is bad)
Time: 1:00-2:30pm
Location: meet at the front entrance gate to Old Canberra House on Lennox Crossing

Making New Metamaterials With Quantum Dot Lego

Scientists have created materials with surprising optical properties, from arrays of lego-like cubes, made of caesium lead tri-bromide.

Caesium lead tri-bromide is in a class of material known as perovskites, and, as cubic nanocrystals of size ten nanometres, acts as a quantum dot.

By assembling the cubes like Lego into ordered spheres, or supercrystals, an international team, including researchers from the Research School of Physics were able to manipulate the wavelength and brightness of the light emitted from the structures.
