Director's Message
Kon'nichiwa dōryō,
I have just spent an excellent week with ANU and Australian-based Fujitsu colleagues in Tokyo visiting some of their quantum facilities and meeting with some of Fujitsu’s top business partners. Standing next to Fujitsu’s 64-bit super-conducting Q-bit system at Riken with me are (left) Mr Carsten Larsen, A/Prof James Sullivan (NPAA), Dr Rose Ahlefeldt (QST), Dr Jie (Sophie) Zhao (QST) and Mr Mahesh Krishnan. I am very grateful to Carsten and Mahesh for their hospitality and providing such a wonderful introduction to Fujitsu research. After we return the team will be formulating the next steps in this exciting partnership with Fujitsu.
I hope the week went well for everyone and my thanks to Cedric for acting while I was away.
Cheers, Tim |

Attention Physics HDR Students! |

We are looking for expressions of interest for 3 Minute student talks at the Heavy Ion Accelerator Symposium (HIAS) running from 11-13 November at ANU. The talks are designed to replace traditional poster sessions, be more engaging and allow for shorter talks in a friendly, low stakes environment. The format is similar to the 3 Minute Thesis, where you will tell us about your research in simple and engaging language. There will also be prizes for the best talks!
We highly encourage research students from any stage of their degree to participate - you can gain experience giving talks, have fun, and have the chance to win an award.
Participants need to be registered attendees of the symposium, and expressions of interest are required by October 25th. » read more

College of Science - 'Leading A Research Group' Series
Leading a research group brings with it many challenges, and academic staff receive little, if any training in this critical aspect of their job. The College is presenting a series of informal conversations with successful research group leaders from across the College, about the approaches that they take to running their own groups.
These sessions will offer a valuable opportunity for early and mid-career academics who are leading their own research groups to gain insights into the strategies used by some of the College’s successful research leaders.
In the third and final session of the series (Wednesday, 13 November from 12.00pm), Kiaran Kirk will be in conversation with Professor Naomi McClure-Griffiths (RSAA) and Professor Andy Hogg (RSES).
Session 3 Date: Wednesday, 13 November Time: 12.00pm – 1.30pm Location: Slatyer Seminar Room
The series is intended primarily for early to mid-career academic staff, but all are welcome. For further information and to register, please see here. |

CSIRO Alumni Scholarship In Physics 2025
The CSIRO Alumni Scholarship in Physics is a postgraduate scholarship of $6000, which will be used to fund travel costs to visit and/or conduct research in an overseas or interstate institution such as a university or research establishment of international standing in the field of proposed research. In these uncertain times, we understand that travel restrictions may have an impact. To reflect the current situation, we have updated our criteria for the scholarship to allow the winner up to 18 months to use the scholarship for travel or use it to further their career with training, attend online conferences or develop their research. » read more
