Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
I hope the week is going well for you.
School Executive will meet next week. If you have topics for raising please talk with your representatives or Heads of Department.
Above, a nice scene with a young Swamphen family I spotted on the way to the Botanic Gardens for lunch this week (which I can highly recommend).
Below, the Honourable Kim Carr and Professor Ian Chubb share a discussion on Kim’s new book earlier this week. The event was well attended by members of Physics who undoubtedly remember Senator Carr’s highly successful term as Science minister, coincident with Ian’s defining stint as Chief Scientist. It was during this time that we saw the foundations of funding for national research infrastructure and the rise of NCRIS. Their combined efforts and vision has enabled us to build on scientific capability and grow capacity in our HIA and ANFF communities. I found the discussion helpful to frame where we’ve come from, that long march Kim refers to, and some of the historical turning points that steered us towards our success as the national school of physics.
Cheers, Tim |

College of Science - 'Leading A Research Group' Series
Leading a research group brings with it many challenges, and academic staff receive little, if any training in this critical aspect of their job. The College is presenting a series of informal conversations with successful research group leaders from across the College, about the approaches that they take to running their own groups.
These sessions will offer a valuable opportunity for early and mid-career academics who are leading their own research groups to gain insights into the strategies used by some of the College’s successful research leaders.
In the third and final session of the series (Wednesday, 13 November from 12.00pm), Kiaran Kirk will be in conversation with Professor Naomi McClure-Griffiths (RSAA) and Professor Andy Hogg (RSES).
Session 3 Date: Wednesday, 13 November Time: 12.00pm – 1.30pm Location: Slatyer Seminar Room » read more

Twisted Light Made Simple
|
A new approach to creating materials that interact selectively with different twists in light, known as chiral responses, greatly simplifies their fabrication, and could pave the way for advances in biosensing, photochemistry, and quantum optics.
A team from the Nonlinear Physics Centre were exploring chiral metasurfaces when they came up with the idea. Metasurfaces are patterned with regular arrays of structures smaller than the wavelength of light; the exact geometry of the structures determines responses to light, that can be dramatically different from naturally occurring materials. » read more
