Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
Thank you to all those who attended the final Honours seminars yesterday. I had a chance to catch a few, witnessing a representative showcase of our research strengths. Our Honours program is one of the jewels in our research crown and all of our honours students are to be congratulated for their efforts this year. My thanks as always to the many supervisors, research teams and honours convenors for their contributions to a program that truly stands out at a national level.
Congratulations to the CIs of the four LIEF grants awarded to our School this week.

LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER FOR AIP CONGRESS. The 2024 AIP Congress, NFO-17, COMMAD, and ANZCOP are less than a month away - register here! More than ever, now is the time to show up and support this important national event. Australian university research needs your voice and professional societies are an effective demonstration of community resilience.
I'll be covering highlights from the recent College Executive at the School Exec today. Your Heads can update you at your next Departmental meeting.
Above, the signing of a new International Research Lab (IRL) in Mathematics with the CRNS and ANU. This progressive agreement will see the opportunity for substantial academic exchanges between the two institutions. Left: Professor Sylvie Monniaux (MSI), Associate Professor Antoine Petit (CEO and Chair CNRS), Distinguished Professor Genevieve Bell (VC), Associate Professor Pierre Portal (MSI). My congratulations to Sylvie and Pierre for their leadership it this partnership. Discussions are underway to establish a similar program at RSPhys. Please let Prof John Close (ADR) or me know if you are interested in this.
The Founder's Day Meme Competition results are in, see below. Thank you to all entries!
Hope you have a relaxing weekend. Tim |

College of Science - 'Leading A Research Group' Series
Leading a research group brings with it many challenges, and academic staff receive little, if any training in this critical aspect of their job. The College is presenting a series of informal conversations with successful research group leaders from across the College, about the approaches that they take to running their own groups.
These sessions will offer a valuable opportunity for early and mid-career academics who are leading their own research groups to gain insights into the strategies used by some of the College’s successful research leaders.
In the third and final session of the series (Wednesday, 13 November from 12.00pm), Kiaran Kirk will be in conversation with Professor Naomi McClure-Griffiths (RSAA) and Professor Andy Hogg (RSES).
Session 3 Date: Wednesday, 13 November Time: 12.00pm – 1.30pm Location: Slatyer Seminar Room » read more
