Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
It continues to be a great pleasure to see the auditorium draw in our colleagues from around the world and ISSON has had the pleasure of rounding out the year. Basically, a whole month of international conferences beginning with Korean-Australian Quantum Forum (EH #44), the Heavy Ion Accelerator Symposium (top image), the International Conference on Atomic Collisions in Solids jointly with the International Symposium on Swift Heavy Ions in Matter, and this week the International Symposium on Semiconductor Optoelectronics and Nanotechnology (ISSON). Of course, the significance of the ISSON meeting was greatly amplified as a community tribute to our retiring (but not departing) Distinguished Professor Chennupati Jagadish, AC. We will hold a School morning tea for Jagadish in the new year.
Four of our colleagues have also been feted for career achievements (above);
- Dr. Rocio Camacho Morales from the Department of Electronics Materials Engineering and TMOS on her award of the Australian and New Zealand Optical Society (ANZOS) Geoff Opat Early Career Researcher Prize. Rocio is recognised for an outstanding contribution to the field of optics and photonics in Australia and New Zealand by an early career researcher.
- Distinguished Professor Susan Scott George Szekeres Medal by Jessica Purcell - President of the Australian Mathematical Society (AustMS). This was during the opening ceremony of the joint meetings of the AustMS, the American Mathematical Society and the New Zealand Mathematical Society being held in Auckland.
- Professors Nanda Dasgupta and David Hinde are seen with AIP President Professor Nicole Bell receiving their 2023 joint Walter Boas Medal in person at the recent AIP Congress in Melbourne last week.
Below photos from the ISSON dinner & a minister visiting Quantum Brilliance.
In the mad flurry that always seems to descend around now I’ve taken a bold decision to move the Director’s awards to the BEGINNING of the year. I’m hoping this casts a fresher perspective on nominations.
On the 18th we’ll have our traditional fruit mince pie morning tea. Come and share this small thank you from me to celebrate the end of the year.
