Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
I hope you had a great long weekend. We are closing in on the end of the holiday period and preparations for first semester are already in full swing. This year we will need to renew the AIP accreditation of the ANU Physics Major, which is now scheduled for the beginning of semester 2.
Thanks in advance to all who are teaching/convening a course for helping to put together the required course information. The total amount of information required is quite substantial and the PEC team is grateful for your assistance.
Have a great week, Patrick Kluth (Acting Director) |

Experimental Quantum Technology - Lecturer & Professor Positions At Manchester
The Physics and Astronomy department at the University of Manchester is advertising two permanent academic positions – a full professorship and a lecturer (UK naming scheme equivalent of assistant professor, but with tenure) – in the experimental usage of quantum technology in application based science and/or fundamental physics. This is part of a wider quantum technology initiative with professorships in Maths and Computing Science also available.
Closing dates are the 31st March.
These positions are aimed at starting significant new experimental research directions in the department, collaborating with the Centre for Quantum Science and Engineering. Candidates for the professorship at all levels are welcome to apply, for candidates with the very highest levels of record the establishment of a named chair could be discussed. |
Teaching Opportunity - Get Involved And Be An "Academic of the Week" In The PHYS1101 Labs
We are seeking expressions of interest for the role of "Academic of the Week" for our foundational first-year course, PHYS1101. This involves leading one (or two!) labs, where you will introduce students to the practical aspects of physics, contextualize the lab's relevance, and explain foundational concepts. The commitment includes a short talk at the beginning of the lab and staying on for the first 30 to 60 minutes of each session, with the option to remain throughout the full 3-hour duration. Labs are generally scheduled across Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings, with an additional afternoon session so the week you would be scheduled will be quite busy! This role offers a wonderful chance to engage with our undergraduate students and experience teaching at ANU firsthand. For the students they get to meet additional academics for undergrad student research project opportunities and to hear about the cool stuff they do as physicists at ANU. 🙂 Previous participants include Tim Senden, Shankar Dutt, Andrey Sukhorukov, and Jodie Bradby. If you are interested or have further questions, please contact Jodie Bradby as soon as possible. We look forward to your participation in enriching our students' learning experience. |
