Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
I hope the week has gone well for you. It was a week of engagement for many of us and I appreciate everything people are doing to work with our external partners. From students to emeriti, I’ve been so pleased to see people lean into growing our relationships.
This week, the IEEE honoured the 14UD Heavy Ion Accelerator with a citation recognising the historical milestone of 50 years of significant international scientific contribution. For more details of the event and citation, see Dr Phil Dooley’s fantastic coverage on the School website. Congratulations to the whole NPAA/HIA team, and my thanks to the ACT Section of IEEE for championing this award with the international committee. Our Tower of Strength proudly joins the company of two Australian icons, the Parkes radiotelescope and the Tidbinbilla tracking station connected forever in the Australian psyche through the 2000 movie, “The Dish”. I can so easily imagine a future Aussie classic celebrating the people of “The Tower”.
Below, Dr Shintaro Sato, Senior VP and Head of Fujitsu’s Quantum Laboratory presents to a cross-campus audience on the technologies incorporated into a suite of quantum projects at Fujitsu. It was our chance to return the hospitality shown to the ANU delegation late last year as we look to grow this important partnership. The past two days have given several Physics groups the opportunity to develop closer research ties with Fujitsu. My many thanks to A/Prof James Sullivan for coordinating this visit.
It is a delight to see that the CTLab has facilitated another art exhibition. This adds to a long line of public works the group have inspired over the years and my thanks to Dr Levi Beeching (CTLab, MP) for making this happen. If you are keen to see the exhibition "Shimmering renditions" by Beata Tworek (Artist and NGA Conservator) it will open on Fri 7th March 6-8pm, running for 2 weeks at Q gallery in Ainslie shops.
Have a great weekend, Tim |

Statistical Support For HDR Students
|
The services of the Statistical Support Network are available to Masters and PhD students for their research projects. Statistical support is available for design of experiments and surveys, data management, exploratory data analysis, statistical modelling and data presentation.
Students and their supervisors are welcome to book an initial consultation with the SSN lead via this link. Consultations are free. Depending on the nature of the support required, students may be provided with links to relevant videos, text-based or web-based tutorials, or may be connected with SSN members in Colleges who have volunteered their time to advise research students.
If you have any queries about the Statistical Support Network or the services it provides, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us at ssn@anu.edu.au. The network members look forward to collaborating with you on your projects! |

Call For Physics Problems – ANU Physics Society Weekly Challenge
The ANU Physics Society is looking for original physics problems to feature in their new Weekly Physics Challenge! They want to engage students in problem-solving and critical thinking by posting thought-provoking challenges each week on their social media.
The ANU Physics Society welcome problems at a range of difficulty levels, but are especially keen on those that are accessible to first-year students while still being interesting and engaging.
If you’d like to contribute, please send your problem(s) with solutions to anuphysicssociety@gmail.com. Please also mention whether you would like to be credited, or kept anonymous, with your submission.
Your support in fostering an engaging and curious physics community at ANU is greatly appreciated! |
