Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

Wherever you’ve been over this lovely, short week I’m hoping you’ve been able to enjoy the onset of Autumn.

Wonderful news from Distinguished Professor Chennupati Jagadish today.  He has been honoured with election into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Founded in 1780, the AAAS honours excellence and convenes leaders from every field of human endeavour to examine new ideas, address issues of global importance and work together.  I think their charter summarises the timeless ideals, “to cultivate every art and science which may tend to advance the interest, honour, dignity, and happiness of a free, independent, and virtuous people.”  More than ever, intellectual societies help establish (or maintain) the direction of research policy, with impact on global security, international affairs and elevating education across the humanities and sciences. I’m so pleased to see Jagadish add his perspective to this prestigious institution. (Photo credit: Bradley Cummings)

Have a good break.

Tim

Windows 10 End of Life

Win10 reaches end of life in October and for security reasons we will be requiring all Win10 machines to be removed from the network. If your Win10 machine is new enough please run the Windows 11 update offered within Windows Update and let us know you have completed the upgrade.

For machines that are too old we can force through the W11 upgrade for you. This is with the understanding that this is unsupported by Microsoft and it may break at some point in the future.

Dancing With Ghosts To Banish Magnetic Noise

Physicists have devised a way to combine an atomic magnetometer with a gyroscope, using a pulsed laser system and a simple mixture of gases.

The new technique will not only be a radical improvement for precision measurements of rotation, but has the potential to be a powerful tool in the search for exotic physics, such as dark matter.

The significance of the new device stems from its ability to measure rotation and magnetic fields concurrently, which enables orders of magnitude improvement in the sensitivity, said Dr Morgan Hedges, from the Department of Quantum Sciences and Technology (QST).
