Director's Message
I always enjoy starting the EH with news of an award. This week, it’s a great pleasure to congratulate Dr Kirill Koshelev on his recent award from the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) of the Early Career Scientist Prize in Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics for 2025. IUPAP is the only global organization covering all areas of physics and has brought international harmony around standards and conventions for over 103 years.
With global pressures on academic institutions now is a great time to show solidarity and join the Australian Institute of Physics. Postgraduate students holding an accredited Physics degree are encouraged to apply for full Membership (MAIP), paying a reduced student rate for their membership, Member Full-Time Student. They receive physical copies of the Australian Physics magazine and also have access to benefits such as travel funds and reduced rates for the 2024 AIP Congress and 2025 AIP Summer Meeting.
Physicists unite!
And lastly, below a lone pigeon wonders where all their colleagues have gone. Clearly they weren’t reading the Event Horizon and missed that the flock has flown the coup after a long overdue clean of the back alley behind the School Manager’s and Director’s office – pew!!! Might be wise to skip visiting us for a few days. (photo credit: James Irwin)
Have a great weekend, rug up. Tim |

Windows 10 End of Life
Win10 reaches end of life in October and for security reasons we will be requiring all Win10 machines to be removed from the network. If your Win10 machine is new enough please run the Windows 11 update offered within Windows Update and let us know you have completed the upgrade.
For machines that are too old we can force through the W11 upgrade for you. This is with the understanding that this is unsupported by Microsoft and it may break at some point in the future.

Resonant Monoclinic Metasurfaces For Nonlinear Chirality
|
Congratulations to Dhruv Hariharan and Ivan Toftul (DMP), who demonstrated, with collaborators, that a monoclinic metasurface composed of achiral meta-atoms can convert resonantly linearly polarized light into elliptically polarized light in both linear and nonlinear regimes. The paper originated from Dhruv’s ASC project, underpinning a great success of our PhB program in physics. » read more
