Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
I am honoured to take on the role of Interim Director during this period of transition for our school. With my move to this role we will need a new Head of the Department of Materials Physics, and an Expression of Interest will be distributed shortly. As I step into these admittedly big shoes, I want to begin by expressing our collective gratitude to Tim for his outstanding leadership, dedication, and service as Director. Tim has strengthened our school in countless ways, and we wish him every success in his new role as PVC REI. The school will remain Tim's academic home for his research and supervision activities.
It’s been a tough few weeks for the ANU and school, with the college change management process underway. I am available to talk with staff and Tim has graciously agreed to assist during the transition.
Also please note that Liudmila Mangos is acting School Manager this week while James is on some very well-deserved leave.
Today also marks the launch of Canvas, our new learning management system here at ANU. I want to express my thanks to all those who have been working hard on their Canvas pages for the past few months and weeks, I know it has been a significant undertaking. I would particularly like to thank our Associate Director Education Ben Buchler and Prof Paul Francis for all their hard work in supporting everyone to get this done.
In all that is happening, it might be easy to overlook the fact that there is a new travel system in place! I had a quick look and was pleased to see there is an option to book flights yourself, which was a concern for many. For approvals and travel bookings, look for the ATPI Travel Hub here.
Finally, thank you for the many kind messages I received when my appointment was announced. I think we will all need all the good wishes as we navigate the weeks and months ahead! And, as we navigate the school with less resources in some areas, I encourage us all to be especially kind and supportive of one another.
Jodie Interim Director
For the first few weeks, please contact me at jodie.bradby@anu.edu.au and use my Jodie.Bradby calendar. I'll remain in my current office (Level 4 of the Carver Building, room J4-14) during this initial transition period. While I have access to the director.physics@anu.edu.au email and calendar, we need time to sort out the meeting arrangements with Tim and others during the transition. |

MSI | Topological Methods For Time-varying Data: Theory And Applications (Top Time) Workshop
Topological Data Analysis (TDA) is a research area at the intersection of Algebra, Topology, Geometry, Statistics and Machine Learning. While methods from TDA have been applied successfully to data from a variety of domains — from financial mathematics, to materials science, climate science, biomedical imaging, or social science —, there has been less work done on studying in a principled way how such methods can be applied to data that changes dynamically over time. The goal of this workshop is to bring together experts in TDA with experts in application domains in which time-varying data is particularly prevalent. Examples include time series in climate modelling and financial mathematics, as well as dynamic networks in epidemiology and social science modelling.
Date: Mon 27 - Friday 31 Oct 2025 Time: Mon 9am- Fri 5pm Venue: Seminar Rooms 1.33 & 1.37, Hanna Neumann Building 145
