Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
A big thank you to everyone who submitted an Expression of Interest for the current ARC Discovery Projects round - over 30 submissions from across the school is something to be genuinely proud of. I'm sorry to those who didn't make the cut this round (my own EoI missed out, so I feel your pain!), and all the very best to those moving on to full proposals. A reminder that all grant applications should involve the Research Management team as early as possible. Grants should not be submitted without their involvement and the sign-off of the university.
This week's research highlight comes from a collaboration between Emeritus Professor Anatoli Kheifets and colleagues at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, published in Physical Review Letters. By shaping an ultrashort laser pulse, the team was able to probe deep into atomic structure and uncover features previously inaccessible to other experimental techniques.
A reminder that Dr Vincent Daria has kindly agreed to run another advanced laser safety course this week. RSPhys staff and students attend free of charge and there are still places available, please contact Vincent directly if you're interested or register here.
Our next School Executive meeting is on Wednesday 10th March, so if you have items for the agenda please reach out to your Head of Department or representative.
Finally, we're looking for volunteers for ANU Open Day on Saturday 28th March. It's always a great day and a wonderful chance to chat with prospective students and I always enjoy the buzz on campus on that day. Also if you have ideas for the Physics display please contact me – I am keen we put on a good show!
